Taken in isolation, there's no solid evidence to believe that this is any more than a freak event.
That said, it does raise questions about possible future change in the North Atlantic ocean heat pumps; and what sort of thing we can possibly look forward to if it were to go away.

The Daily Kos article in question uses the Mercator two-week forecast from 30/12/09 - if you check the current one (issued 06/01/10), the anomalous flow pattern is largely gone.
