Leiden is a nice town, though we've actually been there only once: for a friend's PhD defence.
Oddly enough, he and his wife stayed the night before last with us, due to the snow causing the magic train juice to leak out of the last Cambridge/KingsX train of the evening.
It's Oxford's twin town (hence the visit, which was Official) and - apart from more canals and fewer hills - it's a surprising amount like Oxford. In a parallel universe Oxford still looks like that, I'm quite sure.
