I've been enjoying the first few Fables volumes, but skipped ahead to the latest because it is one of the Hugo nominees for Best Graphic Story. It is rather fun: starts with a vignette of the relationship between Little Boy Blue and Rose Red, then Cinderella's daring rescue of Pinocchio, then most of it is the war between the good guys led by

Major spoilers there, by the way. You don't find out who's leading the army of evil for several books, nor do you know how the battle turns out...

Skipping ahead means that you have missed out on a lot of the side stories that make what happens possible.

The big problem with the Graphic Novel Cat, much like the TV cat, is that the stories are part of on going storylines, which to the fans of those stories means that the stories have more impact because of what has gone before.

I can bear it, I think; this is the only one of the graphic novels category where I had read any of the previous volumes, so it's a useful education for me.

Anyway, I think that it's OK to give awards to single examples from a multi-part series (and this happens with the written fiction categories as well). Certainly it makes plenty of sense compared to the almost meaningless votes for Best Editor, Best Professional Artist, Best Fan Writer and Best Fan Artist, which really do seem to me to be popularity contests without any real consideration of the body of work produced in a given twelve-month period.
