I was reading them to my son Christopher BEFORE they made the films, using Alan Rickman's voice for Snape and an accent rather like Coltrane's for Hagrid (though I'd stolen it actually from a crossbreed of several English accents including one of the (I think) Yorkshiremen in "All Creatures Great and Small"). It was quite gratifying when she then picked Rickman for Snape, since that was who I'd had in mind all along.

I have to admit to having seen the films before reading the books, but I still think Rickman and Coltrane are perfect for the parts (as is most of the casting, actually).
