“You were close with President Adar.”
It wasn’t a question but Laura took the bait anyway.
“Yes. I worked with him for a long time.” She shifted in the overstuffed chair to face Bill. “We were more than colleagues, though. At times.”
Bill looked down at his tightly clasped hands, then back to Laura. “Do you ever miss him?”
“Sometimes I’ve wished he had lived so it was him dealing with cranky Quorum Delegates. But then I think we’d all be long since dead.”
Bill grinned. “Somehow I don’t see Richard Adar talking me out of a fight with a comment about making babies.”
Laura snorted. “No. He would have replaced you.”
“Whadd’ya mean?”
“Richard was smart enough to know your plan was wrong but not smart enough to know he’d need you. And he didn’t negotiate with dissenters. He got rid of them.”
Bill silently contemplated Laura’s assessment. His cerulean eyes explored the curves of her face, the soft lines by her eyes, the firm set of her chin.
“You never answered my question.”
Laura reached across the armrests and took Bill’s hand in hers. “No, Bill. I was done with Richard before I ever stepped foot on Galactica.”
