5 powerful words

Apr 30, 2006 19:23

I was thinking of assigning my students to decide what, to them, are the five most powerful words.  Of course, swearing is not allowed - and I'd like to stick with English.  So, your words?

1) balderdash
2) appalled
3) accountable

Did you get these out of your head, or were they from the latest State of the Union Address? I love the word "appalled". It makes me feel British somehow.

They're from the head -- they just seemed the strongest to me at the time. To me most words don't really get their full strength until combined with other words -- kinda like the rings that summon Captain Planet, except in this case, like, Captain Sentence/Captain Sentence Fragment/Captain Phrase.

Except "Balderdash". That one stands on its own.

1. never
2. always
3. love
4. hate
5. war

these were my first impression however, now that i think about it, some of the "ideas" behind the words are powerful, but maybe not the actual words.
