She fell to the ground, her hands clenching around the soggy dirt desperately. Pain surged through her, its epicentre, her belly burning with a heavy weight of the day’s events. Her arms began to shake as her upper body lost strength and her torso argued with her waist.
She tried to focus on a distant leaf on the ground, looking so delicate and serene, as if oblivious to the tainted soil it lay on. She squinted her eyes, pouring all her energy into that one little leaf. Her eye sight started to blur, the edges of her visions rounding into a disfigured formation of what the world pretended to look like.
She glanced up at Robin’s back, urging him to turn around and save her the trouble of calling out to him. Please, she begged to whatever power may be watching, please let him see me.
She moaned as her belly stung with a regretful kick, and she decided to use up any ounce of energy her body once clung to. She lifted her heavy head, her eyelids drearily floating over their globes, and slowly opened her mouth. The dry skin on her lips screamed in the wind, and yet Marian could only class them as the calm before the storm. And with one final push of strength, she voiced the name of her hero, and hoped for them not to be her last.
Funny, she thought, I always thought his name would be the last word I spoke before death clung to my soul and carried me away.
“Robin.”
