Thanks for writing this up! I'm going to send it to several people, including my parents. I know several people who have a hard time communicating effectively with their doctors, and this should help.
Several years ago my grandmother was dying from a non-healing ulcerated wound on her leg that was slowing destroying her leg. She made the choice to not have surgery (amputation) as it was unlikely to heal. Her doctor was reluctant to give her much in the way of morphine for her extreme pain as he was afraid she would become addicted. Addicted? She was dying! Only at the very end was he willing to give her enough to make her comfortable, but she went nearly out of her mind due to pain first.
