If you're looking for good, easy-on-the-stomach comfort food, but don't feel like eating at McDonalds every day, I recommend finding either a great ramen or curry place. Ramen might be difficult if you can't read the menu, but any place that serves curry will probably have at least Curry Rice, which is a thick, spicy gravy you mix in with white rice... It's absolutely amazing and easy on the stomach - makes for a great transition when you decide to feel a bit risky.
Also, I fully agree about the Coke issue. I could be wrong, but all soda in Japan uses sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, hence the sweeter taste.
Oh, and be sure to try some beer! Japanese beer is delicious! I'm an Asahi fan.
Yeah, I definitely plan to branch out a little bit, but since me and Sarah were starving and wanting to get the day started and all but I think we're going to go to a ramen place today!! We've also vowed to get a pizza... Even if we don't eat all of it, it is an experience that needs to happen.
OH MAN, I do not drink alcohol at all but there's this place in the same building that the McDonalds was in that has a beer special where it comes in these big cowboy boots cups... I want on it so bad. I'm still debating if I'll go drinking at all in Japan, since I'm allowed to and all, but don't usuall in the states.
