Not a shopaholic

... but I like clothes. I first really began to get into fashion shortly after I started working full time. It's been over eight years now. I've dealt with some significant-to-me lifestyle fluctuations, and a lot of style discovery and progression. (My latest discovery is that my style won't stay perfectly the same. Last year I wore my white pique ( Read more... )

Which reminds me... I have some MaxStudio dresses in printed knits, and they're comfy and look put together.

My cousin Tiera mentioned going to the big thrift store with you while you're here.
I know, not helping ;)
But to be fair, most of my clothes from there.

I've never known a girl who didn't have too many clothes. And we're at that funny on between stage when we still feel young, but want to be seen as professional. Especially us without kids in our thirties. It's like "college fashion" "mom style" and "professional style" which isn't always terribly helpful in some cases (though you're more professional so have that need).

I went through a lot of this last year. I'm still looking for some things. Why is it so hard to find a simple, yet interesting, blouse to go with novelty skirts? How many graphic tees can I wear, and how can I wear them without looking like a total nerd?

But I've also identified some things that are just "me" and that's ok.
1) comfort. If it's not comfortable, I don't wear it often.
2) I don't dry clean things. I have a trash bag full of gorgeous thrifted clothes sitting there that I never to get cleaned, and now half ( ... )

I think periodically re-evaluating one's closets is a good thing! I've been working on narrowing mine down and trying to keep stuff that fits and stuff I'm comfortable wearing. :-)

I don't mind having a large closet, but I'd enjoy just keeping it current. Right now I know there are fairly significant needs I have, but there's so many things I have that it's hard to identify the empty categories AND hard to justify filling the holes that I do find. :)

Have you read the Wardrobe Architect series on the Colette blog at all?

http://www.coletterie.com/category/wardrobe-architect

The focus is on defining your style in terms of specific things like silhouettes and color palettes. I agree that descriptors like "classic" and "bohemian" can be pretty useless.

What I like best about the Colette approach is that she assumes you sew, and you'll be sewing at least some of your wardrobe.

The last few entries focus on the capsule wardrobe, which might be slightly more minimal than you are into, but so many people seem to have trouble letting go of things, I suppose she is speaking to them. If that's not your problem, skip it and just the style sections instead.

I really enjoyed this post because I'm at this (for lack of a better word) crisis point with my own wardrobe and trying to figure out where I'm going. I've been nursing babies for so long that I haven't worn any dresses in years and I'm getting SO tired of the skirt+top+scarf combo. Lately I've done a lot of the vest/dress shirt/necktie with a skirt for church and I love that, and now that I'm weaning Ginger I've been dabbling with wearing some of my old dresses occasionally, but time has passed and I'm not sure if they are really "me" any more, aside from the fact that while i can wear them, only one (so far) really still fits my changed body well.

Soooo... anyway.
