This and That

Jen had a great post on Facebook vs. blogs vs. LJ (DW still really isn't where the costumers are), and I realized I've been contributing to LJ being quiet. I don't post often, for one of two basic reasons:

1. I feel I have nothing to say, or no pictures to illustrate it with, and so posting would waste everyone's time.
2. I have SO MUCH to say that ( Read more... )

Congrats on the Hello Dolly casting! That's awesome!

I've had good luck bleaching ivory/ecru cotton lace to make it white. Is that an option?

I think faux fur would be a really pretty choice for your dress. Golden d'Or usually has a decent selection, and there are tons of places online that sell it. Even really standard places like fabric.com: http://www.fabric.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=bc448e9a-3955-4158-b4ba-57e3cf8a2dc2 Just look for the ones that say something about being silky/minky/luxury quality.

Thank you! I'm excited - it's been a lot of fun so far.

That is a great idea! My few experiences with bleach have been either bad (destroying some vintage gloves in a too-strong solution) or indifferent (petticoat yellowing over time). How much do you usually use?

Okay, I'm definitely going to Golden d'Or on Friday. Then I'll decide from there. Thank you!

I kind of go with the "mad scientist" approach to dying and bleaching. I just try something and hope for the best. I've bleached a variety of cotton lace over the years and I haven't ruined anything yet, but I'm not sure what exact mixture I used. I try to use as little bleach as possible though, so maybe 1/3 or 1/2 bleach/water?

I need to comment on her post because I agreed so much with it. Like you I either feel like I have nothing to say or too much! I'm sure neither is really true for either of us though. ;-)

Congrats on Hello Dolly - hope it's fun for you!

No, it sure isn't! I love reading your posts, although I'm not so good at commenting.

Thank you! It's been fun so far. :)

That's a thought! Although I'm concerned about not being able to feel it; I really want stuff that looks and feels like fur. I'll see what I can find in Dallas this weekend.

I'm trying! You've been a great example.

as far as your fur issue, i would suggest scouring ebay/etsy/antique/thrift shops for old fur coats. i have had great success doing this, and it is a cheap way to get lots of fur to work with. my new pelisse is trimmed with real lamb fur from an old tattered cape i got for $24! there is tons of fur left for other projects, or adding trim to the skirt.

I've had indifferent success with vintage fur in the past, but I can try again. Buying online it's hard to tell if the pelt is dried or still supple - and if it's in good shape, I have an attach of conscience and don't want to cut it up! :p But I've been planning to hit a few antique malls so I might luck out. Thank you!
