‘Grandpa, how did you and Grandpa Seung-ah meet?’ Junhyung looks down at the small girl he’s tucking into bed, her thick black hair peeking from under unicorn bed sheets and from the corner of his eye he catches her older sister craning her neck to hear his response. His eyes crease behind thickly framed glasses and he smiles, seating himself on the edge of the bed. Soomi wriggles over as Jooyeon leaves her bed and clambers in beside her. Both girls staring up with large eyes.

' We met in a rose garden…’

It’s the middle of summer when Hyunseung finds himself in the local park. Following his idle feet, he winds up in the Rose Garden located to the west side of the park near the business area of town. The heat is stifling and his air conditioning is broken. He figured outside there would be a cooling breeze and plenty of ice cream but so far he’s not seen even one ice cream stall and the wind is warmer than the static air around him.

The roses around him smell sweet but the heat makes the smell over powering. His head spins a little and he somehow manages to push himself under the shaded area of a gazebo. There’s a small water fountain in the middle and he’s never thought something made of stone and water could look so inviting. He cups his hands together under the cool running water and splashes his face. His aim is a little off and the icy water hits his nose, spraying his bangs but the slap of cool hair on his forehead is a welcome relief.

He’s mid sip, water splashing over his chin and down his throat when he catches sight of a single lavender rose amidst a sea of yellow. His interest peaks and he lets the rest of the water in his palms slosh against his sneakers. The rose itself is perfectly formed and undamaged. There’s a hint of pink at the tips where the petals curls and Hyunseung reaches out a curious hand, gently pressing his finger tips to the velvety flower.

‘Purple roses mean love at first sight’ A voice in his ear makes him jump and Hyunseung turns to see a man smiling down at him. His stomach pangs. Wavy brown hair falling over black aviators that catch the sun and his eyes drop to the dark leather aviator jacket slung over the man‘s arm. ‘They stand for love and enchantment’ The other says, sinking to crouch beside Hyunseung. He smells like a mixture of Aloe-Vera and lemons. Hyunseung finds himself unconsciously leaning closer. ‘How do you know this?’ Hyunseung asks, running his fingers over the rose one last time before straightening up. The stranger mirrors him and rises too, extending a large hand towards him. ‘My aunt owns a flower shop in Incheon’ He starts to retract the offered hand. ‘My name is Jang Hyunseung’ The pretty male finds himself saying as he seals his hand in other‘s. Thick lips curl up at the corners and the stranger hums in amusement. His hand is warm against Hyunseung‘s palm, so much warmer than the sweltering sun above them. ‘Yong Junhyung’

‘So your granddaughters seem to think you met in a rose garden’ Their grown-up daughter, Sunye, laughs as she sips her coffee. The girls are playing in the garden and Junhyung is probably hiding out with their son-in-law, talking about some cool new gadget that neither have a use for. ‘Well you know what your father is like - always over embellishing things’ Hyunseung smiles fondly despite his words. His fingers linger on a silver bracelet around his wrist and even after all this time, when they’re nearing fifty-five, Junhyung still makes him grin like an idiot.

‘Come on, Hyung. This place is all the rage!.. Well it will be… maybe’ Yoseob pleads, tugging at his wrist. The bouncer at the door grunts and steps aside to let them in. His dark beady eyes seem to pierce through Hyunseung’s skin and he’s never felt so out of place before. He can’t help but notice the man has a spider tattooed on his neck as they pass and Hyunseung has a bad feeling about this club already.

There’s people with tattoo’s that cover almost every inch of skin and in the corner there’s a man - Hyunseung daren’t look, with his dimples pierced. Hyunseung lets his eyes drift when he’s certain the other isn’t looking but perhaps he’s staring too long because they make eye contact and …. Is that a gum piercing? ‘Seobie-ah, I don’t like this place’ Hyunseung murmurs as the lights begin to go down. He can feel the other man staring at him from across the room. There’s a metallic wheeze and smoke slowly begins to curl around his favourite sneakers. He almost looks out of place in his skinny jeans and plain white shirt - Yoseob hadn’t warned him that there seemed to be an unspoken dress code of baggy jeans and grungy tee-shirts.

He wonders why he let Yoseob talk him into coming to this dingy run-down club when the blonde yelps excitedly and grasps at his wrist. ‘He’s here, Hyung. He’s here’ The blonde bounces on his heels, eyes frighteningly large and Hyunseung has to physically push on his shoulders to keep the younger boy still. ‘Seobie-ah, calm down. You’re drawing attention’ Hyunseung glances at the tattooed woman giving them a strange look and he half smiles before giving his friend a gentle shove in the direction of the man he’d mentioned.

They get closer to the table, avoiding swinging heads, flailing arms and stomping feet when a dark haired boy at the table catches sight of them. ‘Seobie! You came’ The boy, roughly the same height as Yoseob barrels towards them. He’s short and muscular with thick lips and Cleopatra-styled eyeliner. His arms wrap around Yoseob, swinging the cute blonde off the floor before he sets his eyes on Hyunseung. Oh crap. His lungs contract with the force of the boy’s grip on him and the heavy thumping of music and screaming guitars is drowned out momentarily as the boy all but shouts in his ear. ‘You bought a friend too! Nice to meet you. I’m Kikwang’ The boy squeezes him tighter still then lets go. No one notices the way Hyunseung sways on his feet.

He’s pulled into the booth, for the first time noticing the other two men. Kikwang latches to the tallest, a young man with bleach blonde hair and dark skin. He doesn’t look very Korean but Hyunseung thinks best to keep his mouth shut. Yoseob manages to wiggle in next to a man who looks older than the others. His face is scary at first but he smiles as Yoseob presses his shoulders to his side and Hyunseung summarizes he’s a mature sort of handsome. This, he realises, is Yoseob’s precious ‘Doo-Hyungie’.

‘This is Doojoon-Hyung, Kikwang-ah and Dongwoon-ah’ Yoseob grins, pointing to each in turn. They all shake hands with him but he’s soon struck with the feeling of being a fifth wheel. Dongwoon tries to make conversation from time to time but Kikwang seems to have a constant need for attention and most attempts fall short. Doojoon isn’t much better but it seems more like he has a need to give Yoseob attention, as much as the small blonde craves it. Resigning himself to his fate, Hyunseung pushes himself out of the booth. ‘I’m going to get a drink’ He doesn’t think any of them heard him.

‘I thought you said he liked him!’ Yoseob hisses, glaring at Kikwang once Hyunseung is out of range. The other blanches, pulling away from Dongwoon’s lips. ‘He does, doesn’t he, Doojoon! We told him you were bringing Seungie-sshi but he got up and went to the bar just before you got here’ Kikwang pouts, getting Doojoon to back him up. ‘He’s right’ The eldest sighs, running a hand over Yoseob’s arm. ‘He’s at the bar now. He seemed interested but.. I don’t know what goes through that kid’s head sometimes’ The eldest of the group shakes his head, giving Yoseob’s shoulder a gentle pat. ‘Hyung, he was really besotted after we bumped into you and your friend before’ Dongwoon pipes up, reaching for Doojoon’s beer. Three hands reach out to slap it away.

Hyunseung is bored, ever so slightly tipsy but bored. The smoke now curls around his knees. He’s moping into his third beer when something smooth and cool presses to his knuckles. Glancing up he notices a shot glass filled with clear liquid and follows the hand that gently holds it to thick arms and strong shoulders. ‘Go on’ The male says, placing it just inches from Hyunseung’s fingers. ‘You look like you could use it’ He tips his head back, downing his own shot. The glass thuds against the bar top as he sets it down and pours himself another shot. He extends it towards Hyunseung and after a few moments, the brunette decides to clink glasses with the stranger. The liquid burns slightly as it goes down and the man beside him lets out a soft ‘ah’ of appreciation. The man steals back the shot glass and pours them both another.

‘So what brings you here? No offence but you don’t look like the regulars that hang out here’ Hyunseung feels the flush that burns his cheeks and is thankful for the dark lighting. He can almost feel the other man’s eyes on him and he fights the urge to squirm in his seat by reaching for his beer. ‘Yeah, well you don’t exactly look like a regular either’ He finds his eyes straying to the other side of the bar where the man from earlier is being served. He turns his head, catching Hyunseung’s eye and winks to the doe-eyed man.

The stranger next to him laughs, a low and husky noise that steals Hyunseung’s attention and gives him goose bumps. ’My name is Junhyung’ He smiles, thick lips curling up lazily in the corners. ’Hyunseung’ He returns, trying to concentrate on anything but that pouty lower lip. ‘My friend dragged me here’ Hyunseung whines into his beer. ‘I’m the fifth wheel’ He jerks his thumb in the direction of the booth and misses the way his new friend’s eyes twinkle.

‘My friends were trying to set me up on a blind date’ Junhyung says, combing his hands through his hair. Hyunseung gives a snort, realising his bottle is empty. ‘ I wouldn’t have been surprised if Seobie-ah had tried to set me up tonight, he always pulls this sort of stuff’ Hyunseung admits rather honestly. Junhyung stiffens, turning to him and there’s a flash of guilt across his features. ‘Well about that-’

‘I’ve seen you looking at me’ Interrupts a voice. A large hand finds it’s way to Hyunseung’s shoulder, grasping tightly against his shoulder. The man from earlier smiles down at him, the ring in the skin between his gum and inner lip shining in the light. His hair is spiked and there’s weird patterns shaved into the side of his head, revealing even more tattoos. Hyunseung swallows thickly, eyeing the small metal spikes that sit in the man’s dimples ‘Do you mind?’ The man asks, casting his eyes towards Junhyung. His hand brushes the side of Hyunseung’s neck and he shudders.

Junhyung smiles, pushing himself to his feet. Hyunseung casts him a terrified look. ‘Don’t leave me’ He mouths, reaching out to grasp at Junhyung’s sleeve. He’s not spoken much to the other boy but he’s comfortable and there’s something vaguely familiar about him. Hyunseung isn’t sure whether that’s his heart talking or the alcohol. ‘Actually I do mind’ Junhyung replies, pulling Hyunseung up beside him. His arm curls tightly around Hyunseung’s waist, pulling him flush to his side and Hyunseung instantly presses his face to the other boy’s neck. ‘Thank you’ He whispers but Junhyung doesn’t seem to be done yet.

‘We were in the middle of something, so if you don’t mind, you can leave’ Junhyung growls, hand creeping low on Hyunseung’s hip. His head jerks up a little, feeling lips press to his temple and the guy seems to get the hint. He watches as the other moves away, Junhyung’s arm getting a little tighter. ‘Thank you so-’ There’s a hand at the back of his neck and he finds himself turning, lips moving before he’s even thought of the words and it’s too late because Junhyung has already leant forwards, warm lips brushing Hyunseung’s. It’s a relatively short kiss but Junhyung’s tongue is cool like the Soju he’s been drinking and Hyunseung feels increasingly drunk.

‘Let’s get out of here’ Junhyung smirks against his ear, fingers rubbing gentle circles into Hyunseung’s hips. He lingers for a moment as the younger man grabs his coat, eyes falling to the table where his friend is sat. Yoseob is cuddled up against the elder man, just as he had been the last five times Hyunseung had looked back to the table and he decides that for tonight, his friend will be just fine.

The cool air hits him like a wave, sending shivers down his spine. It’s so quiet and refreshing compared to the heavy squealing of electric guitars that Hyunseung misses the step and stumbles forwards. Junhyung’s arms wrap around his waist, holding him steady and he smiles thankfully to the other man. ‘Steady on, we’re not there yet’ Junhyung chuckles against his ear and he feels something run down his spine that isn’t due to the cold weather.

Junhyung snags him by the wrist, and gives him a gentle tug as he starts away from the murky club. He smells like scented apple-smoke, leather and some popular cologne. It’s a pleasant smell that has Hyunseung lingering just behind the other as he’s lead past bars and late night supermarkets. They don’t say anything. He works in the area but it seems so different at this time of night, the bright shop fronts muted by bright lights.

He recognises the park as Junhyung leads him through metal gates, and he pauses to look at the pond just across the park. Sometimes he eats here with Kikwang and Yoseob when the weather is warm enough, watching the ducks on the pond. Now at nightfall, they are tucked up away from the cold and Hyunseung watches as the breeze creates ripples across the surface. Junhyung hums as he steps back, hands snagging at Hyunseung’s sleeve. ‘Come on, I have something to show you’ His fingers are warm as they brush Hyunseung’s making the older male jump.

He follows obediently behind Junhyung, recognising the path towards the rose-garden even before the smell of the flowers strikes them. In the cool night air the roses aren’t as over-powering and Hyunseung takes a deep breathe, enjoying the faint hint of rose that tickles his nose. Junhyung gives him a gentle tug towards the gazebo, letting go of his hand and settles himself down onto the cold wooden seating.

Hyunseung sinks down next to him moments later, twisting to look over the fencing at the roses. The white roses look like a sea of stars and he wonders what it would be like to touch the stars. ’Like stars’ He murmurs unconsciously. They shine under the moonlight, so completely breath taking that he almost forgets the man beside him. ‘Let’s try again’ Junhyung clears his throat and Hyunseung jumps, turning to look at him with large eyes.

‘Hi, I’m Junhyung. It’s nice to meet you’ The brunette reaches out a hand towards Hyunseung and he stares at it for several long seconds before glancing back to the man’s eyes. Junhyung looks serious but there’s a slight tug at the corner of his lips and a gleam in his eyes that makes his stomach flip. Hyunseung reaches out to take the offered hand. ‘Umm.. I’m Hyunseung’ He laughs, they’ve already done this part tonight.
