On this road that they walk together, Baekhyun looks forward. He does not need to look to the sides at any distractions or back (to know that Chanyeol will always be there, half a step behind him); he just needs to look ahead, following on the path he carves for himself and chasing headlong after goals and dreams of the future.
Chanyeol is-or seems to be-content to go where Baekhyun goes. As a general rule, he interferes as little as possible, choosing to support Baekhyun with a comforting hand barely ghosting the small of the older’s back most of the time, and stepping in only when absolutely necessary. It has been like that since as long as Baekhyun can remember. So when Chanyeol gives him a bit of advice seemingly out of the blue one day, Baekhyun is understandably confused.
“You should look up sometimes.” It’s a simple statement, one that Chanyeol throws out casually, but it takes Baekhyun a few moments to process.
Baekhyun slows his pace but does not tear his eyes from the road ahead of them when he asks, “Why?”
“Because you might see a shooting star.”
It’s Chanyeol’s contemplative tone that finally makes Baekhyun stop in his tracks and look up. The sky is a nice navy blue color, and the stars twinkle softly in the distance. It’s a beautiful sight that Baekhyun doesn’t often take the time to enjoy, but in all honesty, it’s because he doesn’t see what’s so special about it. He turns around to tell Chanyeol as much.
Clearly, Chanyeol can see what Baekhyun can’t because his face is upturned, features lit up from the light of the moon. His mouth is slightly open, displaying his teeth as he grins widely. But it’s his eyes-so full of wonder and elation-that captivate Baekhyun, and when Chanyeol looks down and meets Baekhyun’s gaze, Baekhyun can see the galaxy reflected back at him. It is then that Baekhyun understands why Chanyeol looks up so much.
As Chanyeol beams at him, Baekhyun wonders if maybe he has been wrong in stubbornly pushing forward towards his goals all this time. Because Baekhyun’s future isn’t in front of him-it has always been half a step behind him.
Chanyeol’s face registers surprise when Baekhyun tugs him forward so they can walk side by side, but it’s quickly replaced by a soft smile that has Baekhyun hoping the younger can see the future beside him too.
(What Baekhyun doesn’t know is that Chanyeol doesn’t look up very often, because Chanyeol doesn’t look up to see his shooting star)
