“He was aiming at Don,” Liz said softly.
Alan sat, stunned. Donnie. Charlie’s assailant had been aiming at Donnie. He tried to process the information, but he couldn’t grasp it. Irrationally, he felt relieved to know that Charlie hadn’t been the target. Target or not, Charlie was lying in a hospital, wounded, maybe even dying.
But somewhere Donnie, who had spent his whole life protecting his younger brother, was feeling guilty because he had failed. Alan said, “Liz? Is Donnie okay?”
Liz realized he wasn’t talking about Don’s physical wellbeing. She shook her head. “I don’t know. I hope so.”
