As Liz expected, Alan stood on the front steps, waiting impatiently.
Once Alan was in the car and the door was closed, Liz started driving toward the hospital. “He’ll be okay…”
“You can’t know that,” Alan exploded. “What the hell happened? Were you there? Why was he even there to begin with?”
Liz took a deep breath. She could deal with victims’ families. She just wasn’t used to dealing with a family member who was a friend.
She touched Alan’s hand. “I was there. It was a fluke. The guy wasn’t even aiming at him.”
“Who was he aiming at?”
