Don had been livid at the missing office furniture so Colby had helped David move it all back into place. Then they had been distracted by a case. Now Colby had the whole weekend to find a way to appease David's sweet tooth.
Saturday afternoon he found a bakery and bought a whole cheesecake. Unfortunately for Colby he failed to get the box all the way up the three flights of stairs to his apartment. Mrs. Coolidge from next door found him swearing at the flattened box on the stairwell and came to his rescue.
After explaining the situation to her Colby spent Sunday afternoon with Mrs. Coolidge learning to cook, they had decided on brownies. As Mrs. Coolidge had pointed out, anyone can bake brownies. Mrs. Coolidge was wrong, Colby wasn't anybody. He couldn't bake brownies to save his life. Seeing as he wanted to save his friendship though he made several attempts. Most of the time he had more of the ingredients on his face than in the mixing bowl. The fourth try were edible, the rest fit only for the garbage. He spent the next hour cleaning Mrs. Coolidge's kitchen, before thanking her profusely.
Monday morning and the brownies were safely packed in a Tupperware container on the passenger seat of his car. Arriving at the office to find David already there he approached his friend.
“I am so sorry, can we please call an end to this cheesecake war?” Colby held the box out to David.
David lifted the lid and sniffed.
“Chocolate Brownies?” David asked.
“I made them myself.” Colby was inordinately proud of himself.
“Wow.” David was impressed. “You baked these for me?”
Colby nodded. David looked him in the eye.
“Truce.” David held out his hand. Colby shook it smiling at his friend.
