Summary: Hyeri uses an interview with the school’s swim team captain as a means of asking personal questions. School Newspaper!AU
Hyeri taps her pencil against her notepad gently as her eyes continue their slow perusal of the girl before her. Ahyoung fidgets slightly in response to the constant scrutiny, but manages to keep her expression together. Her eyes don’t shy away from the contact and Hyeri can’t help but enjoy the feeling of staring into those warm eyes. It’s enough to make her want to take another picture, if she hadn’t already taken so many of Ahyoung just sitting there. The interview had only just started barely half an hour ago and her camera is already half full.
“So, what do you think about your fans?” Hyeri asks as she poises the pencil over the page.
Ahyoung smiles shyly at that and Hyeri bites down on her lips to prevent herself from gushing at the sight.
“You make me sound like a celebrity.”
“You are popular, though. And judging by how loud the cheers are when you swim, you know it too.”
“I guess I don’t have a problem with them? I’m glad for the support.”
Hyeri hums thoughtfully as she scribbles the answer in.
“Are you single?” Hyeri asks suddenly, voice nonchalant but the glint in her eye almost predatory.
Ahyoung blinks. “I’m sorry?”
“You know, are you seeing someone right now?”
“No, I heard you the first time. I just don’t see how this has anything to do with my swimming?” Ahyoung tugs at the thin material of her swimsuit absentmindedly and Hyeri fights another urge to take a picture. She had insisted that Ahyoung wear it for the interview and now, she’s quite thankful that she did as she watches the way the material molds over her curves.
“But it has everything to do with it,” Hyeri reassures, though inwardly she knows she’s lying through her teeth, “you see, relationships take up time, and our readers will be curious about just how much time you dedicate to training. They’ll maybe even want to consider the hard work versus talent debate.”
“Oh.” Ahyoung bites her lip slightly. “Then yes, I’m single.”
And the smile on Hyeri’s lip grows and grows.

Sojin places the portfolio of pictures down on the desk and sighs. Hyeri tries to look nonchalant and innocent about the incoming lecture that she is certain to follow but the fact that Minah has already started giggling quietly in the background sort of makes it hard not to be wary.
“Hyeri, when you said you wanted to take care of Ahyoung’s interview, you told me you I could trust you, right?”
Sojin’s voice is calm and level as expected and Hyeri nods in response eagerly.
“You told me you’d behave professionally and you wouldn’t let your infatuation get in the way.” Sojin jabs at finger at the portfolio. “So why did you lie?”
“I didn’t. I did do the interview professionally.”
“Why is Ahyoung wearing her swimsuit then?”
“Because we’re interviewing her about her position as the captain of the club and her record breaking skills?”
“And the several photos you took of her chest? Do we even need to go into the questions you asked?”
“They were good hard hitting questions!” Hyeri protests.
“They would be if you focused on her training regime or advice to incoming members. You asked her about her dating history, ideal types and if she would be against dating younger girls who happen to be a part of the newspaper club.” Sojin sighs. “You know what, I’ll have Minah do a quick follow-up. Maybe we’ll be able to meet the deadline.”
“No!” Hyeri interjects, “Ahyoung is mine.”
Sojin raises an eyebrow at the statement.
A light blush colors Hyeri’s cheeks as she looks away. “I meant mine as in my assignment to cover.”
Sojin groans and slouches in her chair. “You want to date her, ask her out yourself,” she says wearily, “don’t invade her privacy like this. You’re not on the newspaper club to spy on the people you like.”
“But Unnie~” Hyeri pouts.
“Don’t play cute with me. And don’t worry, I’m not going to tell her what you did with the camera.”
“Does that mean I can keep the photos?” Hyeri’s fingers start to stray towards the folder but Sojin slides it out of her reach.
“Nope.” Sojin puts the folder into one of her drawers and shuts it with a conclusive bang.
Behind Hyeri, Minah has given up on keeping in her mirth and bursts out laughing.

It’s not love at first sight for Hyeri, when she first saw Ahyoung swim. The skintight outfit, the fit body, the way she moved through the water and that wide grin when she won, it was all physical then. Looking at Ahyoung made Hyeri warm all over and she wanted nothing more than to kiss her, to hug her and hold her.
It only got worse from there. The sudden attraction meant Hyeri would always be observing Ahyoung wherever she went. It meant sneaky visits to watch her practice well after school ended and attending all of her swim meets. Before Hyeri knew it she had the urge to tear off that swimsuit with her teeth and every time she saw Ahyoung pass by she couldn’t help but undress her with her eyes, wondering just how soft her skin would feel in her hands. She wanted to do so much more than just kiss and cuddle, but nowhere did the desire to love the other girl come in. She only wanted to have her, not be with her.
And then, at an away competition when Ahyoung didn’t get first place and her eyes seemed so watery and her smile so brittle and Hyeri’s heart ached slightly at the sight, did she admit that maybe she wanted more than just sex. Maybe, Hyeri finally realized, she likes her.
Falling in love came immediately after.

In the end Minah does take the assignment and Hyeri sneaks into the empty classroom it’s conducted in to watch. Ahyoung wears casual clothes this time, loosely fitting but still attractive and she speaks of her hobbies with a fond smile. The questions are clear and straightforward and nothing seems to unnerve the other girl. It’s so different from the interview Hyeri hosted and a part of her does feel guilty for tricking Ahyoung like that, even if she didn’t know it.
Though Hyeri does frown at how happily Ahyoung laughs along with Minah.
When the interview finishes and Minah is packing up, Hyeri decides to make her exit, only to catch Ahyoung’s attention.
She freezes as the other girl walks towards her.
“Hey,” Ahyoung greets casually.
“Hello.”
The tenseness comes strictly from Hyeri and she finds that she can’t really look Ahyoung in the eye, though looking elsewhere can be just as dangerous.
“So how is the article coming along? Minah-ssi told me you’re the one who’s writing it still?”
Hyeri opens her mouth to play it cool, to tell her that it’s coming along great and she’s already done with her first draft and she’s sure Ahyoung will be swarmed with even more fans than ever. However, all that comes out is an apology.
“I’m sorry.”
Ahyoung tilts her head in question. “What for?”
Hyeri looks over Ahyoung’s shoulder at Minah, who’s putting away the camera. Minah gives her a thumbs up supportively and Hyeri takes a deep breath. “For not conducting the interview properly. I used the interview as a way of asking private questions and that’s not right.”
The news doesn’t seem to affect Ahyoung visibly when Hyeri finally sneaks a glance. Instead, she seems curious. “Why did you?”
Hyeri takes a deep breath, readying her excuses. Saying she was doing it for another fan obviously would fall apart and playing down her feelings and expressing only a slight interest could potentially unearth her real feelings. Better to say it was a prank. Minah, however, beats her to her response.
“Because she likes you!”
Hyeri eyes widen comically before they narrow into a glare. A blush, red and hot, works its way over her face and she’s aware her fingers are clutching onto her shirt tightly. Minah only grins cheekily before tapping an imaginary watch on her wrist to mock her for her hesitation. She picks up her things and leaves through the door after a playful wave.
Ahyoung simply looks amused.
Hyeri clears her throat softly. “I know you have every right to be angry but...”
“I’ll forgive you,” Ahyoung cuts in cheerfully, “on one condition though.”
Hyeri looks up eagerly. “What?”
“Have dinner with me.”
Hyeri stares wide eyed at Ahyoung for those words, as her brain tries to keep up and remove her doubts. Did she just get asked out on a date by Ahyoung? Her heart beats heavily in her chest and she’s sure her blush is here to stay.
How Hyeri would love to kiss her right now. So she does just like that.
Ahyoung immediately leans away at the sudden presence of Hyeri’s face, but she doesn’t look offended. Instead she laughs, loud and bright.
“Hey, you remember what I said about kissing. Anyways, I’ll pick you up this weekend.”
Ahyoung walks away with a wave that Hyeri returns numbly. When she notices that she’s the only one left in the classroom she turns around and leaves the room, determination etched on her face, and a thousand plans already forming in her mind.
What are your views on kissing?
That also doesn’t have anything at all to do with swimming.
But the readers want to know about more than just swimming. I’m going to add in some stuff about you as a person. How you feel about kissing can say a lot.
When it comes to kissing I’d prefer a date first, of course.
So you kiss on the first date then?
Only if it’s a really good date.
