It's Under My Skin But Out of My Hands
Carly doesn’t cry for days afterwards.
You spend your whole time watching her, waiting for the façade to crack, even try to talk to her about it a few times, but all she says is “Don’t have time for this, Nick. Later, okay?”
You knows it’s bullshit. All you have right now is time. Time to heal, time to remember. Time to try and forget.
Her mouth has mostly healed by the time you both check out of the hospital, but you’ll never forget how it looked that night; lips mutilated, ripped and bloody and it makes your chest ache to think about it. Makes you want to put your fist through the wall, anything to forget how that mouth you’d dreamed about for years looked because of him.
You touch it, gently, barely-there press of your fingers, and that’s where she loses it. Presses her face into your t-shirt and sobs. She clutches handfuls of material in her hands, and you try not to focus on the bandage that covers what used to be her finger. It makes you sick to your stomach to think of it, that you couldn’t protect her.
You’ll die before you let anyone hurt her again.
That night she wakes up screaming, and you throw back the covers so she can crawl into bed with you. She’s drenched with sweat and tears, and she lays her head on your chest, like she used to when you were kids and she’d had a bad dream.
Now that she’s started crying, it doesn’t seem like she can stop, and you stroke her bare shoulder as she sobs over and over, “He’s gone, they’re gone, they’re all gone.”
You and her. When it all comes down to it, that’s all that’s left.
She looks up at you, and you can’t stand to see it, the pain behind her eyes. She’s far too young to look so old, and you know if you looked in the mirror right now, you could say the same thing about yourself.
Carly is so small, so fragile in your hands, but when you kiss her, you feel like you’re the one who’s breaking apart.
