some moron with the handle Canacreations lifts a pic from Rich Morris's Ten Doctors Dr. Who fan comic and makes a t-shirt out of it. Is outed as an art thief.

Shocking surprise it's all happening on eBay.... how is "You didn't create it, so you don't have any rights to it" that difficult?

there's "you didn't create the art" fail, "you don't own the character trademark" fail, and "you're just making copyright jargon up out of your ass, aren't you?" fail.

It's like Christmas come early XD

And because he made such an ass out of himself, he's being reported to every outlet he sells at, from Ebay to Etsy to you name it. If he'd just said "my bad" he would have walked away with a light spanking. Furthermore, the artist says he offered to sell the guy the right to use the image but the guy ripped into him! Oh yeah, he's going down like the Bismarck.

Rich probably dodged a bullet there, when the guy refused to buy. Had Rich been given money for the image, he might have been in trouble with the BBC too. Small blessings, bright side, silver lining, whatever. I know Rich, he was probably kneejerking when he said he offered the "I'll let you buy it" compromise, because he's a nice guy and a gentleman.

Personally, I'm simply appalled at the attitude this t-shirt guy has been exhibiting. He's condescending as all hell and a I simply cannot understand what combination of stubbornness and pride could bring about this crazy way of thinking.

yah, now that you put it that way, I can see your point. I was thinking in terms of the physical piece of art, not the image on the art. That was my take on the offer too, a "well since you already did it, why not make it legit and we can both walk away" compromise.

The awesome thing is that it got picked up on Colleen Doran's blog, and taken a step further. So now it's not the sales outlets he was selling on that are getting notified: it's the trademark holders of the infringed items themselves. Now shit gets real...
