You should not wear sandals to the market

Met with two of my teammates (also my best friends) from Advertising to get this project on the road (we need to sell 100 bottles of our juice to the general student populace in a competition against other groups. Basically an exercise in product marketing). We met, argued, went to the market to buy supplies, and I learned that I definitely should ( Read more... )

Well, for starters. . . have you seen the movie that the song came from? It's Franco Zeffirelli's version of Romeo and Juliet from 1968, probably the best-known film version. Zeffirelli was in his early forties when he made the movie, and was best known as an opera director. He took everything he knew about opera, everything he knew about romanticized Italy, everything he knew about youth and counterculture, and stuffed it all into Romeo and Juliet. Here, for instance, is "What Is A Youth" in context, sung as part of the Capulet party where R and J first meet:

Much of the movie is like this. I think it might appeal to you. For my money, the two best performances in the film are John McEnery as Mercutio (one of my favorite characters EVAR) and Michael York as Tybalt. Neither of whom really appear in this clip, though Tybalt's face does flash by during the dance.

What was it about "What Is A Youth?" that appealed to you specifically? That might help me make a few more recommendations.

I didn't know you can find it on YouTube! ns_tulkas May 22 2007, 23:42:34 UTC
I have seen this movie, and I wanted to get a hold of a copy of it for years! I first saw it in my Fashion History course while we were studying on Renaissance clothing, because the director used accurate costumes of different styles to resonate the characters' attributes. Coloring, cuts, and all. I still have the paper I did on the stylistic differences between Juliet's and Juliet's mom's clothing.

I remember you spoke of this movie before, and I searched Wikipedia for more information on it. It's very interesting. What makes this movie all the more brilliant is that after 40 years it's still the best film version of the play, the adaptation still relevant and captivating today. For god sakes, they still show it in school!

What about the song appealed to me? Well, the... style, genre, of the song (?) I'm not sure I know to explain it. I like Loreena Mckennitt; folk, olde music, as it were. That and the voice of the singer appealed to me. Mm... the notes, melody? I liked what he does with his voice on the "so do-e-o-e-oes a maid ( ... )

I don't think the whole movie is on YouTube, but the bit with the song is, and there are a couple of complete scenes if you poke around. I must say, in this scene, the hats are fabulous. I love the hats!

I'm glad they show it in Israel. There's just so goshdarn much to love about it that you can kind of forget the fact that the whole play depends on the Idiot Plot, and that neither Romeo nor Juliet are particularly interesting characters.

In particular, I love what Zeffirelli and John McEnery did with Mercutio. It's hard to imagine now, but they bucked a powerful performance history that had Mercutio as this fun, witty, urbane ladies' man who ended up being kind of frivolous. And then here comes this new interpretation, of a whip-smart, profoundly disturbed young man struggling mightily with issues of his own, beginning with his sexual orientation and getting more intense from there . . . I mean, you watch what happens to him during the Queen Mab speech, and you just know that something *happened* to this kid to mess him up ( ... )

This is killing me. I can't find a clip of Queen Mab's speech and I don't remember what happened in the movie...

I won't be at home for the next few days, but as soon as I get back I'll search these bands. I've already looked for Custer LaRue but couldn't find anything :( Thank you for the recs!
