CHARACTER NAME: Inara Serra
SERIES: Firefly/Serenity
RESERVED:No
WISHLIST: Yes
PERSONALITY: A beautiful and enigmatic woman, Inara is known
for her grace, manners, and subtlety. As a trained Companion it is
her job to make any clients feel secure and welcomed when partaking of
her services, and as such she is possessing of a variety of skills
which she uses to assist in entertaining clients. Possessing of a
calm and decidedly feminine air, she is known to have a seemingly
inordinate amount of patience when dealing with most people, and her
diplomatic skills have earned her the title of 'Ambassador' due to the
ease she has demonstrated in diffusing potentially difficult
situations. While it is very difficult for people to ruffle her
feathers there are a few people who even Inara has difficulty
maintaining her composure around, though she hides it well.
Proud without being haughty, she carries herself with the presence of
royalty and has been known to charm those around her with nothing more
than a slight smile and a kind word. Dangerous when crossed due to
her knowledge of weaponry and the human body, many find the idea of
upsetting Inara to be something they would not want to experience -
losing her favor not only costs you her friendship, the possibility of
ever enjoying her company, but it can also cost you the chance to ever
experience the skills of a Companion.
TIMELINE: Inara will be taken from the middle of Serenity,
prior to when anyone dies but after realizing that she loves Mal.
BACKGROUND: Born on the planet Sihnon, Inara Serra spent her
early life training at Companion House Madrassa where she quickly rose
up through their ranks. Proving to be an excellent student, she was
being groomed to be a House Priestess when she, for reasons she has
never revealed, decided to leave and travel the outer rim. When
pressed she has given such vague answers as "to see the universe" but
many believe that she had other, deeper reasons.
After traveling for a while Inara met up with Captain Malcolm
Reynolds, himself a Sergeant in the Unification War who had come into
possession of a Firefly-class ship called Serenity, which had two
transportation shuttles. After a few rounds of verbal one-upmanship,
Inara had convinced Mal that due to her standing as a licensed
Companion renting a shuttle to her would lend an air of class to the
salvaging and smuggling operation Mal hoped to run. Part of her deal
with Mal was that the shuttle was to be considered her home, which
meant she had the right to allow or deny entry to whoever she liked.
She made it clear she had no intention of servicing him or the crew,
and with the deal solidified they began an incredibly complex but
mostly contentious relationship.
Due to Inara's status as an Alliance-licensed Companion, she was able
to use her reputation in order to assist Mal and the crew of the ship
by getting them access to better areas. As Companions personally pick
their clients, she was able to maintain a mostly successful business
based around where Serenity had arranged jobs, but in time she came to
realize that she was developing feelings for Captain Reynolds,
feelings which she could tell he was experiencing as well, which
complicated matters for her. In an effort to hide the unacknowledged
attraction they felt she made it a point to bicker with him whenever
the opportunity arose, sometimes allowing her feelings to shine
through in more hurtful comments when he truly upset her.
As she traveled with Serenity Inara formed close relationships with
those on the crew. She became an older sister type for the ship's
mechanic Kaylee, bonded with ship doctor Simon over their mutual
aristocracy and breeding, assisted in caring for Simon's mentally
damaged sister River, debated religion with Shepherd Book who was
Catholic as opposed to her Buddhist, and was on friendly terms with
the pilot Wash, his wife (and ship's second in command) Zoe, and
resident bruiser Jayne.
Over time, when the obvious tension between her and Mal became too
difficult for her to hide, with everyone on the crew except for Jayne
being aware of the unresolved sparks between the two, Inara decided
enough was enough and left to go back to the Companion training House
she left behind. There, she was sought out by Bounty Hunter Jubal
Early, a man sent by the Alliance to find River and bring her back to
the scientists who had experimented on the poor girl's brain. Sending
off a message to her old friends on the Serenity, which due to a
complete lack of verbal sparring on her part was quickly deduced to be
a trap, Inara soon found herself back among her friends gearing up for
an adventure the likes of which she had never been on before.
ABILITIES:
Mediation techniques - including tea ceremony, massage, acupressure
Martial skills - Dueling and Archery
Fashion - Inara knows how to dress and present herself
Etiquette - as a trained diplomat Inara is incredibly well-mannered
Psychology - all Companions are trained on how to read their clients

EDENSPHERE NAME: Companion
BIRTHDAY LOG: Yes, please
DREAM: It was a beautiful morning, the sun high in the sky as
the early-morning fog continued it's lazy journey across the land.
She was standing in a clearing watching two men facing off against
each other, preparing to duel over what one considered an affront to
her honor. A feeling of horror flowed through her as she looked first
at the man who had initiated the duel, her neutral expression hiding
the fact that she was truly afraid this man would be killed today
before her, and then at the man who had decided to 'claim her' as his
own personal Companion.
To her right stood a well-known businessman, his calm demeanor and
semi-amused tone indicating that this was certainly not the first duel
he had witnessed. He leaned towards her slightly, providing his
thoughts on the situation at the two men listened to the rules. "Do
you think he realizes how good of a duelist he's facing?" the man
asked with a gruff tone.
She shook her head slowly, wincing as the fighting began. Her heart
was lodged firmly in her throat as she watch the one she cared for
smirk as the wind blew through his dark hair. She blinked, shocked as
the realization occurred to her that he had absolutely no idea that
the reason why he appeared to be winning was because his opponent was
clearly playing with him. "He's being toyed with...Don't fall for
that!"
A scream was stifled in her throat as she watched the better fighter
of the two assume a relaxed pose, which his opponent quickly attempted
to use to his advantage unaware that it was simply a ruse. One quick
moment and sword pierced flesh, cleanly opening a rather nasty wound
in the taller man's side. His hand covered the wound as she waited,
dumbstruck, to see what would happen next. The shorter of the two,
confident in his eventual victory, pressed his advantage and rushed
forward with his sword flying. Within a few moments the dark-haired
man was on the ground, his sword broken beneath the boot heel of his
opponent as he sneered up at him.
Without thinking she rushed forward, speaking quickly. "Wait! I'll
stay here, exclusive, to you. Just...let him live."
Her momentary interference gave the grounded man all the distraction
he needed as the one with the sword looked away to stare at her in
reaction to her comment. Taking his chance, the man on the ground
knocks the sword out of his opponent's hand, clubbing him across the
jaw with the hilt of the broken sword. He quickly kicks up the freed
sword and throws it at the other man, stabbing him through the chest.
Stunned, the stabbed opponent manages to pull out the blade, just as
another punch connects with his jaw dropping him to the ground.
A crowd gathers around, amazed at how the earlier scene has been
reversed. The older man speaks, a note of finality in his voice.
"He's down. You have to finish it, lad. You have to finish it. For a
man to lie beaten, and yet breathing? It makes him a coward."
She comes forward, nodding in agreement. "It's humiliation." They
both watch as the man grins, stabbing his opponent three times in
non-fatal areas before throwing down the sword and turning to walk
away in disgust. Without a second thought she joins him, wrapping her
arms around his midsection to help him stay standing, the angry shouts
of the fallen opponent behind them.
Calling out to them in a tone filled with anger, she turned slowly as
she listened to him.
"You set this up, whore. After I bought and paid for you. I should
have uglied you up so much no one else'd want you."
A look of shock crosses her face as the man continues, claiming that
he'll see to it that she never works again. A slow, careful, almost
malicious grin settles on her face as she finally comments.
"Actually, that's not how it works. You see, you've
earned yourself a black mark in the client registry. No Companion is
ever going to contract with you, ever again."
With that she shifted her position, assisting the man who fought to
defend her honor back to his ship. Unspoken words hung between them
in the air, but the respect they felt for each other was practically
palpable.
JOURNAL SAMPLE: How quaint, I seem to find myself in a city
made entirely out of a tree. I'll admit, I feel as though this is not
what I'm accustomed to, but this shall have to do. Hopefully the
customs of the people here will be simple enough to adjust to, as it
is well known that you only have one chance to make a first impression
and I will be hard-pressed if I do not make it right.
I hope that I am able to procure new clothing and a job, I feel as
though my reasons for being here are unclear but perhaps in time they
will be revealed. One can only hope, and have faith.
Now, to make myself presentable so that I might greet and become more
aware of my neighbors.
ASPIRATIONS: Honestly, I don't really have any. This is my
first time playing Inara and I'd really just like to play an adult
female who can be both fun and mysterious. I am open to anything,
really.
