[Simon is eating his breakfast when this entry comes up and chokes on the bit of doughnut he's swallowing; a little spray of chewed-up doughtnut bits appears on the page when he coughs it up. Eww.]
I heard from my friend Rick, who's a hatchery Guide, that they are disappearing, actually. People have been reborn from them, too, but more are not appearing in their place.
[Simon shakes his head as he goes to their tea supply, getting two cups and several different flavors of tea out.]
Something is coming. Change is in the air. But nobody seems to know or be able to predict what.
[He gives a not at that, his eyes determined but his expression kind. The Tree had been playing with the hearts of the people he cared about too many times.
[Simon's face falls at the question as he glances at the closed bedroom door again.]
Not well. We went to a Wilderness last month that seemed familiar to both of us. It was a city, but it was empty. Completely devoid of life. We found...
[He hesitates, eyes becoming downcast.]
There were bodies there. People who had died... and there was no discernable cause. None of them looked to be injured or in pain. Something about it was so deeply disturbing, so deeply unsettling... to both of us, but it has affected her very badly. Ever since we came back, there are times where it is though she has been lost inside her own head. I am not sure she is even aware when someone is in the room with her half the time. She'll come out of it enough to eat and bathe and play with the cat a little bit, but otherwise...
[His eyes begin to water again, and he swallows hard, his pain evident in his voice.]I do what I can. I don't like giving her medicine without her consent, so... I just hold her and rock her and try to think soothing thoughts and hope
( ... )
[Simon takes a shaky breath when his father embraces him once more. He relaxes and doesn't get go for several long moments, relishing the touch, realizing suddenly that this is the sort of parental affection he may have lacked from his real father.]
It was. It is. I wish I'd never given in to my curiosity... but I can't change that now. She'll get better soon. She has to. She will for me if nobody else.
Dad...

Whatever happens, I know we'll be strong enough to handle it. But hearing that the cocoons are disappearing... it seems like a bad sign.

It is. But all we can do for now is wait and see. And meanwhile... be prepared for unexpected surprises.

They had to be prepared.]

[Koi looks so sad, pulling in the young man for another embrace.]
I'm so sorry. It must have been terrible for you both.
[Especially someone as sensitive as Qî.]

[He smiles a little.]
I'll speak with her, if possible.
