Getting out what he needed to say. Yep. Derek was brilliant at it.

He agreed completely that the twins had deserved it all. And still did to a certain extent. Just because they'd come back and things were good didn't mean they couldn't hold it over them for a bit longer. The letter writing prank, for example, still had to be carried out. No question there. Though, when Derek would feel the motivation to get back to that project was anyone's guess. He'd be able to manage by Darin and Taylor's birthday anyway.

Derek was doing pretty well just listening to Anya, letting her carry the conversation right up until it inevitably fell back on him. The Ball. Derek's hand faltered for a second, clinking his spoon against bowl before he froze. Oh, Merlin. Yes, the knife was still there. That twist? Yeah. He should have remembered sooner that bringing up the dance would lead here. Instead he'd walked right into it.

"Um." Derek paused, collecting his thoughts and searching for control to keep his jaw from trembling. In ( ... )

"Yeah, you'll have to do that." Derek put on a smile for her before turning back to his food. Seeing the decorations and clips of everyone having a good time might not be the most brilliant thing he'd heard of but it would be good to know that at least Anya had enjoyed the thing. That was worth it. All best mate of the brothers business aside, Derek did want her to actually have fun at the dance. It was her first without supervision and although it did worry him some, it had to happen sometime.

Derek poked the last of his bread toward his soup a few times but his appetite didn't seem inclined to come back. He pushed the bowl away. "How come you're not going with J.J.?"

Well it seemed like an innocent enough question. And the boy in question didn't look to be around so Derek figured it was safe enough to ask.

Anya was, you know, eating her food because it was lunch and all, and at the moment she wasn't the one talking. But this meant that when Derek asked her that question, she all but choked on the food! Um... what had he just said??

She blushed, trying to recover as she patted the top of her chest and coughed a few times to clear her throat, "Um. Heh. JJ? Why would I go with JJ? We're just friends... we went together last year... why would I go with him??" Of course she tended to forget that Derek had spotted the two kissing in the hall that one time. Well, she more or less chose to forget it, because come on now! That was embarrassing!!

((ahahah oh, ljhook. ♥)

A little too close to home that question? Derek grinned. Teasing other people about their happy relationships issues was fine by him apparently. Come on, how could he not still find it hilarous to have caught Anya snogging someone?

"Well, you two did seem to be enjoying that snog last I saw you." Nope, Derek wasn't giving up on that one anytime soon. Possibly ever. "And you did go last year. Was he that bad a dancer? Or a kisser for that matter?"

Wow, who knew Derek would be alright with making fun of Anya about kissing? If he stopped to think she could turn it all around and embarrass him, Derek wouldnt' have dared. Happily, he was using this to distract him from Other Things and so it didn't occur to him at all. Plus, you know, hopefully Anya wouldn't feel the need to bring up he and Hannah given the state of things. The perfect situation, mockery without threat of it coming back. Brilliant.

He WOULD like the fact that he could tease her mercilessly and she couldn't even touch him!! It was quite cruel, but in all honesty, Anya was much too embarrassed to even think about him and Hannah-- though it would have been perfect if she could mention some of the things she knew about the two. She'd been saving this material for a special day, but seeing as they were no longer together... she wouldn't get a chance to use it to embarrass him! Lame.

"I didn't enjoy it," She snapped, pouting slightly as this? Was so not fun in her mind. He was probably having a well good time, but Anya was not pleased in the least. "And he was a fine kis-- dancer. He was a fine dancer!!!" Good grief, has she almost said that? BAH! She failed.

Sigh. "I just... I don't know, I think I have a thing for Felix, which is why I'm going with him." Notice how she didn't say that she didn't not have a thing for JJ. You could like more than one person, could you not? Besides, she was in denial about Jay, he was her best mate after all...

Alright, Derek couldn't help it. In spite of everything else, Anya's slip started him laughing. He should have bothered her about it before! "Oh so you DID like kissing him then?" What, let her off the hook? Where was the fun in that? Besides, Derek was rather in need of something to laugh about.

He pressed his lips together in an attempt to stop laughing and be serious when Anya kept going however. "Oh? Well, that's good then. I suppose." Anya liking someone was, well, not a foriegn concept but not one Derek pondered seriously. He supposed he'd have to get used to hearing that kind of thing. "No, really," he nodded. "That's good. I hope you guys have a good time."

Her cheeks were as bright red as Rudolph's nose, if Santa had come along, he would have told her to guide that damn slay of his. "I did not like kissing him!!" That was such a lie, and she knew it was obvious, so to backtrack a little... "Okay, fine. Perhaps I did. But I like kissing everyone, so its not like its a big deal, Derek."

She may have even stuck her tongue out at him, as that was the best way to react in such circumstances. He was laughing at her an awful lot!! Not cool!!! She may have even kicked him under the table a little >.>

"Well at least I don't like y--" Whoa. She was not going to go there and say that it was a good thing she didn't like him anymore. Anya still wasn't sure if he fully realized just how much she had liked him last year, and frankly? THAT WAS JUST FINE!! "Younger... boys?" Amazing save by one Anya DeLouise!

Derek nearly choked on another laugh. "You what?" She had not just said what he heard. "How many blokes have you been kissing then?" he demanded, still laughing. Clearly he wasn't thinking or else he'd have realized he didn't actually want an answer to that question. Then again, Derek assumed the answer would be an appropriately SMALL number- like one or two. Maybe three.

The kick under the table did nothing to make him stop laughing either.

Her save- or rather near mistake- went completly unnoticed by Derek. If she'd been about to say something other than what she had, he didn't pick up on it. Her stall was probably just because Anya had to make something up that she didn't like quickly. (He'd sort of gathered she was getting a little boy crazy.) "Well I should hope not. Dating third years is a little creepy. Even if you are only a year ahead." They were THIRTEEN. Come on. What wasn't wrong about that?

Anya was not in the best form at the moment. She could not, for the life of her, talk!!! She kept fumbling her words and making an ass of herself -- whether he realized it or not. She was not a happy camper, but fortunately she also knew that she'd be able to soon look back at this conversation and laugh it off as yet another hilarious moment with Derek.

At least he was laughing, right? She would gladly keep making an ass of herself if it meant he wasn't moping around like he had been. This was the Derek and she loved and adored to a million itty, bitty pieces.

"I don't know how many!" Anya was flustered and didn't know how to answer that question. He could easily take all this information back to her brothers, after all. "Only two or three. Don't worry. That was more of a general statement anyway. I just meant that... I mean, he wasn't any better or worse than the others, okay?" Sigh. "Perhaps it would be best if I just get a boyfriend, then I wouldn't have to worry about kissing other boys." That was logical, wasn't it?

Alright, it really was time to stop laughing at her quite so much. The stumbling over her words was rather adorable though. Derek had missed talking to Anya and teasing like normal.

No better or worse than the others? Hard as it was, Derek let that one go.

"Well, this is true." Only having to worry about one person simplified things. Sort of. "But I wouldn't be in any rush. You don't have to date someone. I mean, you can-I mean, I didn't-" Derek's eyes widened as he realized how this was sounding. "I didn't mean- You know what, I'm going to stop talking," he realized quickly.

She had missed the teasing, too. Somehow, this seemed a lot like the times they spent together last year. Things were less complicated between them the previous year at school and sometimes Anya wished that they could go back to that. This seemed to be a small little taste of what they had before, and even though he was teasing her mercilessly, and she was embarrassed to extreme levels... she couldn't help but think that it was nice.

Actually, she didn't quite understand what he was trying to say, so she was a little confused as to why he was the one trying to backtrack now. When did they switch sides? She just looked at him with an interested look, shrugging as she figured it wasn't a big deal either way.

"I know there's no rush. I'm just thinking about it, is all..." Where as last year a relationship of any sort scared her -- mostly because she thought she was too young and that her brothers would kill any poor boy she tried to date -- this year she was more intrigued and interested in seeing what being in a relationship was like.

"Yeah. Well that's...that's a good place to be," he nodded. No need for her to go rushing into things. To be honest, Derek was kind of glad to hear Anya was considering it with pros and cons. Worrying about whether it was worth it yet was a good sign. She'd handle things on her own terms and it would be fine. See? The twins worried over nothing. Anya was getting it figured out. She could make a mature decision ( ... )

She sighed as she watched him leave, perhaps a bit of that crush she had last year lingering about somewhere within her. WHAT?! He was SINGLE now, you could NOT blame her for day dreaming about certain possibilities!!!

Anyway, Anya realized she best be heading off to class too, so she quickly finished up her food and headed off. Quite happy, despite the earlier embarrassment. Derek was going to bounce back from this break up, she had to believe it. And she'd try not to get her hopes up that he'd finally notice her...
