O Hai Sexism

I live in a cozy little microcosm of a company where my technical reputation is fairly secure (I think). So it was a bit of a shock to read this and be reminded of "the real world".

I look forward to the day when a technical company can lose all its female customers, and even notice they're gone.

the wider world, arggh

Ugh. Reminds me of the time I wrote on an "exit interview" form, since they didn't bother with an exit interview proper, "It's a wonder you don't get sued more often." after talking about what an uncomfortable place it was to be a woman in a technical capacity. Every other woman I worked with there was either a "creative" or in marketing/event management. Silicon Valley is not a great place to be a woman.

Sigh. I had hoped that in a place with a high demand for technical people, there'd be more equality. But I suppose it just means that more and more men are imported from other countries.

What bothers me about both recent sexist cases I read on Storify is that the guys TRULY don't seem to grok that they're doing anything wrong, because it's what they grown up seeing other guys do. Western Society has completely normalized the Sex Sells trope, while also telling us that we're sluts if we do it, cold bitches if we don't, apparently we're not allowed to use birth control now, but they also don't want to hire us because we might get knocked up mid-project.

I am so ready to move to Iceland.

It's funny how everybody has ideas on what women "ought to" do or "shouldn't be allowed" to do. The idea that women should be left alone to control their own destiny seems completely alien.
