I actually kind of hated this ep, and I wanted to love it.
I did love the Doctor in the cake, because he's hilariously awful in social contexts, and seriously, whoever thought the cake was a good idea?
Other than that, no. Hell no. Because it felt like RTD at his worst.
(I do love Amy, though. She's a screw-up, kind of, and I like that about her. She's also quite mad, and socially ill-adjusted and quite possibly emotionally fucked-up. It's what fandom usually loves in male characters and what I hate in them, and I'm kind of loving my own hypocrisy. I do love Amy.)
I sort of think Amy's characterisation is sloppy. Maybe I'm wrong, but her awesomeness feels forced (perhaps even more than Rose's, although I might just be bitter after this monstrosity).
When it comes to her being a fuck-up... yes, there's that. I really didn't like that she hit on doctor on the night before her wedding, call me middle class moral, but I don't.
Maybe I'm just tired of the flat characterization and characters making faces and speaking loudly while flailing to express their joy at the amazingness of the universe, when it's coupled with another female alien and her huge brood of hungry offspring. It's a racist metaphor, and the whole thing about stopping illegal aliens from crossing the border didn't help things...
ETA: Also, I'm getting a bit allergic to feminine madness :|
Yeah, the toothy alien mum with numerous progeny shtick has got old already :/ And also kinda lazy at this point. (Isn't it sad that the first monster at hand is the monstrous feminine?)
I liked some of the Rory scenes, though - the one in the Tardis at the beginning, for instance.
