needle substitution

Personally I would just buy the needles needed. I have been knitting for 48 years and have never regretted getting needles that I need. I have always regretted not getting them though when they were needed. They will always be used again. So the next time this situation comes up, that will be one less purchase you will need to make.

I did go to the LYS last week in search of shorter 4mm DPN's and didn't find any. Spending 10+ dollars (inc postage) to buy them online isn't an option for one pair of baby pants.

They won't be used for just one project. That was my whole point. Would you rather do all that work and not have them fit because you didn't want to buy the necessary needles?

I *have* 4mm DPN's. They are just too long to work easily with. Shorter ones aren't necessary.

It's probably best to get the needles called for just to be on the safe side so it doesn't mess up the gauge.

Off topic, but Google translate gave a horrible translation of the pattern. Could you pm me a translation?

The pattern called for 4mm straight needles. I decided to uhm...'save time' by attempting them in the round. :D

I have a very rough translation of the translation on my blog - I don't read Finnish. Now that I have been making them I can tweak the translated translation though.
