I just joined the community, and I have a question. I haven't been knitting very long--in fact, I've never actually finished a project, but I'm currently working on an HP scarf. My question is about gauge. The scarf is supposed to be 5 stitches/inch and 6 rows/inch. Mine is actually 6 stitches/inch, so I need to get a bigger circular needle, I ( Read more... )

If I recall correctly, the scarf is horizontal stripes, right?

In that case, just calculate how many inches each stripe is supposed to be (for example, if it's 22 rows at 6 rows/inch, each stripe is supposed to be 3 2/3 inches long), and then figure out how many rows are needed at YOUR knitting guage to make the stripes the right width. (Following the same example, if the stripes are supposed to be 3 2/3 inches long, and you're knitting at 9 rows per inch, simply knit 33 rows in one color before switching to the next, instead of 22. )

Most people can't achieve the right knitting guage both horizontally and vertically; that's why many patterns are written with the vertical measurements in inches rather than in number of rows.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Since it's simply a horizontal striped scarf, it won't make much difference what the gauge turns out to be.
