It is all down to how much you want to pay. On the cheap end, I'm very happy using my LG GT540, which Carphone Warehouse have from 12 quid a month. It's not got as large a screen as the HTCs, but it runs Android 1.6 out the box, and there's an official update to Android 2.1. There's a slight flaw with how it handles 3G connections occasionally, but it's got everything you'd want in a phone.
(Oh, it's also down to whether you want touchscreen. My LG is resistive touchscreen, but amazingly sensitive.)
Touchscreens take some getting used to. :p Aside from that, despite the shiny adverts that are everywhere about Three improving their coverage, as far as I can tell, they haven't. I miss O2. :(
