You know, I was one of those little kids that relished storms. I even worked a year as an outdoor education teacher - we camped, canoed, hiked - in any type of weather.

And then a couple of years back, lightening struck my big ole tree in the backyard - split it right down the middle, took out our hydro lines for over a week.

The aftermath looked truly catastrophic. Of course it wasn't really, but it left me with a healthy dose of fear when lightening gets too close.

But yeah, I'm with you about the truly magestic nature of storms - especially out on the trail or in the mountains.

Fond memories there, too.

I love watching storms - from a safe place. Lightning is some scary shit! O.O

Watching storms - as you say, from a safe distance - holds the same fascination for me as watching bonfires or any fire, where life or belongings aren't in danger.

We get a lot of tornadoes out here too, so the local TV station is sending out little storm watchers to take videos. I'm sure they were made to sign waivers up the ying yang for that.

But you have to hand it to her. Mother Nature, she sure puts on a hell of a show!

EEP!

I've seen lightning flash horizontally... but always high enough up in the sky that it was just pretty and not frightening...

Yeah, that was a first for me and WAAAY too close.

I can't believe the media is being so irresponsible as to send out 'weather spotters' (read - not paying them) to chase storms this summer!!

We are in Tornado Alley here, are these people REALLY aware of what's going to be coming at them?

... Aren't there professionals for that? o.O

Yep. But they're too smart and not paid near well enough to chase tornados down or mess with our lightening storms.

These people? They've volunteered for the adreniln boost, as well as the sheer excitement of being on TV??
