On my way home from downtown today, I came across a 7-Eleven that proudly advertised, in multiple windows, its new proffering, "
Doritos Loaded". I squinted to get a better look. The item is shaped like a Dorito, appears to have Dorito crumbles on it, but sports a liquid, cheesy center.
More horrible stuff to put into the body! I thought to

Unless you think that mercury on the brain is, somehow, unhealthy.

My fave is barbequed eel (unagi). Godaiko, one of the local Japanese places, serves a Dragon Roll that features that. So good. (It's a treat, though, so I only get it maybe twice a year.)

I'm pretty fond of all fruits, really. I ate cut up watermelon for lunch today. Cold watermelon on a hot summer day, mmm. Last week we were at Trader Joe's and they were offering samples of nectarines. They were delicious so we bought a box. I was worried that they'd go bad before we ate them, but they were so delicious that I sometimes ate two a day.
I'm more circumspect around apples, but a fresh Ginger Gold apple from my local orchard is heavenly.

Fruit in summertime. You can't really go wrong. :) How many nectarines were in the box?

No, I would not eat this thing.
Doesn't the phrasing make it sound just hideous?

My screwed up relationship with food & dieting had made me avoid some food I associate with being "diet" food but that seems to be fading. I still associate pretzels with being "healthier" than chips and I pretty much never eat them. However, I also associate salads, grapefruit and cottage cheese with dieting and find those all to be quite delicious.

Certainly there are degrees. I mean, that Dorito monstrosity is not healthy at all (and, according to the AV Club at the Onion, not even tasty). Also, since I was a teenager I've heard fettuccine alfredo as "heart attack on a plate". At the same time, I often make my pasta primavera with long, flat noodles like fettuccine or linguine & I use a store-bought alfredo sauce--I guess it's "healthier" because I put veggies in it. Or so I tell myself.
As for your categories, I can understand where you're coming from. I guess, for me, "dieting" is a fad, a phase, something inherently temporary, whereas "diet" is just a way to describe your general food intake. You follow a vegetarian diet. If salad, grapefruit & cottage cheese fit that plan, I don't see why they would need to be classified as "dieting" food.
Eh. Just thinking aloud over here.
