She was suspended for her use of it--that kind of belies the idea that it's lost its power.

In a way, nonblack folk using the word is kind of a cultural appropriation, at this point. (Not that I have patience for black folk using the word, either. I've confronted family friends & family members for such in the not-too-distant past.)

In general, I wish people would recognize the term for the obscenity that it is.

This riffs on my thoughts about focusing on the positive. Not to the exclusion of the negative, which is important. But it speaks to a powerful psychological technique of paying attention to the child who is behaving and rewarding them rather than focusing on behavior that is supposed to get your attention by "being bad".

Heh. I'm learning that with my great-niece. She is certainly one for testing limits & doing exactly the opposite of what she'd been told not to do (whether in a scolding tone or an encouraging one).

The bus driver is quite nice; I knew this before he spoke up. I'm glad he used his position to enforce the rules as they exist on paper--a lot of drivers will let way too much slide (considering that the space on a bus is confined & captive).
