I totally agree with you that US immigration policy is overly restrictive & needs to be recalibrated. At the same time, as I read the story, it appears that a family arranged for members to be smuggled in, found that they were nowhere to be found, and it appears that those persons (along with others) were found held against their will. So they stopped being immigrants as far as the generally accepted definition is set as but rather captives.
I agree that the policy of the US is ultimately responsible. Still, I'm glad the family of the persons in question felt free enough to call the authorities. As bungled as our immigration policy is, no one should be shunted through the cracks, as these people appear to have been.
(Do I have a solution to the policy debate? Nope. Which is only one of the reasons I'm not running for office.)
