Sometimes I really wonder if politicians push anti-abortion laws not because they genuinely feel it's wrong, but because they want more poor people out there.

I think it's a two-fer: they get to express their disdain for such a practice, attracting conservative votes, while making sure that a broad spectrum of lower-class folks are available for low-wage work. After all, industrialists (capitalists/rich folk) can't exist without workers to support them.
