Lent, Update 1

I'm not very good at Lent, in all honesty. But I came up with this idea years ago, and I'm trying it again -- to assign the "Deadly Sins" and primary/cardinal virtues to the weeks of Lent, and work on them. The timing is always a mess, as the season has five and a half weeks -- we're finishing up the first full week -- and 7 doesn't go into 5.5, ( Read more... )

Poor gluttony has really fallen on the scale of sin. A lot of medieval theologians considered it the root sin - gluttony, and not pride or disobedience, was what caused Adam and Eve to sin and fall from Eden - and that greed and lust were mere variants of gluttony, and that gluttony also caused sloth and possibly envy, though I'm not quite sure I'm remembering that right.

I suspect gluttony seems a lot worse in a society where there simply isn't enough food, rather than a society where there's plenty of food but it's distributed badly.

Also, there's no way 6 is a high number of girl scout cookies. My favorites are Thin Mints, not Tagalongs, but when I have access to them... the results are not pretty.
