I saw the picture of the White City and the very first thing I thought of was The Devil in the White City. It's quite a good read.

Hey - that's good to hear a second endorsement like that. Thanks!

Perhaps it really means that I've frequently done things right. I hoped so. I hoped that I've really been given a gift for friendship and for love that I've succeeded in using, and in healing where I've putzed it up.

I think so -- for whatever that's worth, as biased as I am (and frankly, as tipsy as I currently am, having just come in from a long dinner)

The Columbian Exhibition of 1893 - Chicago World's Fair - here's a bit of family history! I was reading the journal of my great-great-grandfather on my Dad's side, who, like the family for generations, was a farmer from near Londonderry in Northern Ireland. He went to visit the Chicago World's Fair, and wrote all about it. It was absolutely fascinating. He took the ferry from Londonderry, and it took q long time just to cross the Atlantic. He spent some time in New York, then headed west to Chicago. most of his journal concerns the Fair and his impressions of it. He stayed a month or more in America I think - you would if it took that long to get there!

You might be interested to read his account - I'll try and get round to typing it up sometime. He was quite overwhelmed by the hugeness of everything! He was also quite interested in the farming exhibition, naturally *g*.

Huh. That is cooler than cool. Yes, that would be really interesting to read: if you do it as a project, you could open up a LiveJournal for your great-great-grandfather and enter it in there, so that others could find it as an historical resource!

Hmm - I hadn't thought of doing it that way. I might see if there's enough writing to justify it - it would probably be split by day I think. I'll need to find it first...

Nice Michael Novak. So I'm adding another movie to your must watch list. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, um fabulous in my book. French subtitled. You are going to watch some of these movies I've suggested aren't you?

Minor point but we took you out to eat because we wanted to, an act of graciousness suggested by my husband. He is a kind man. Not as a covert way for us to get out silly. Ang

Actually, right after I got back from seeing you guys, my friend Dan introduced me to The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, putting it on our group to-see list, as it were, after making us all watch a trailer before we went on to the planned film for the evening, which was the less-heart-rending The Big Lebowski.

And yes, yes: I've got your whole list of things to see added into my queue. And of course you guys took me out because of your great graciousness - not that you might not have had a bit of parental "time out" glee for the excuse, of course. :-P
