Sloan Sloan Sloan

So here I am at SMU. Woooo, I’m a SMUdent again for the night. Things have changed. What is this Word 2007? It’s really different. I’m not yet accustomed to Vista (though this is an XP workstation) or its derivative apps with their fancy ribbons and stuff. On my computer I still use Word 2002 and have no plans to upgrade. As Paul Lutus said, no one ( Read more... )

I've never used Word 2007, but I've heard about the .docx thing, and I can't say I understand it. Fortunately, I think there's a way to switch it to saving things in normal .doc format.

It’s kind of like when I was a kid and I would do things like repeating the ends of my sentences under my breath

Man, I STILL do that sometimes. Nice to know I'm not the only one, and that it can potentially be overcome.

They played nearly half of Parallel Play, which S. says is normal band behaviour, since it’s their latest album.

Yeah, that's pretty typical. I have to say I don't really understand it from the promotional angle, as I would imagine they get about the same amount of money from selling ANY of their albums. On the other hand, it does generally give them something new to play, and the audience something new to hear. And the last few times I saw TMBG, they hardly played anything from their most recent albums.

Twenty grand in tuition? Holy shit!
Or twenty grand in tuition plus the cost of existing? I wish.

Well, that's just it, isn't it? 20 big on top of everything else. I live at home, but even I still have expenses and shit. =) It's nuts.

it's not $20k. i meant that I was probably spending about $20k over the course of the two years, on tuition, on rent, on food, on books. Note that two of those items are expenses that always exist, however, they play a much bigger role in my budget since i'm a student. if you were to stay in bedford, i'm guessing you wouldn't have to worry about all the expense i do.

the tuition for the programme is regulated along the lines of any typical grad programme. it was around $7k, I think.

You're right. I even knowingly exaggerated the cost. It's more like 15-16. I'm probably throwing in books and crap and rounding it up.

What happened was that everybody was talking about it in terms of it being "twenty grand," and so I joined in, not wanting to be contrarian.

i wonder if you missed the point re MRCH. Did Sloan "sell out"? yes, they did. they "sold out" way back when they first started selling CDs and putting a cost on a ticket. Commerce is an important part of art. They've had their own label for years, as a means to control their art, but also as a means to continue producing art. this label has also aided the development of other bands. but the commerce is still there. MRCH is just another way to promote the rock show and to make the art viable ( ... )

Hey, look, I wasn't saying that the band didn't need to sell stuff or have expenses to cover. Do you think I'm an idiot? I just thought the way they did it was corny - in my opinion, unwatchably so, and in a way that detracted from their performance instead of adding to it. Perhaps I would have been more charitable had I understood what it was at the time, though.

Yeah, sorry, just all the stuff about the band needing to make money kind of burned me, because I knew that they needed to make money. I just think there's a way to do it that's not quite so crass (that said, we've all seen much worse).
