Hey, at least he mentioned "non-believers", and in a way that didn't make them out to be the barbarians raging at the gates, at that.

Also, while Obama - being American - leans further right than I'd like to see in leaders up here, he does have a certain rock-star political charisma that Canada could do with a shot of...I think Trudeau might have had it at one point, but people were dead sick of him by the time he left office. It's been a long time since there was anyone on the scene here that people could really invest their hopes in.

Yeah, that's about how I feel. It's still not great, but it's a step in the right direction.

As for the spending issue, as ridiculous as it might sound, getting out of an economic slump does generally require a certain amount of extra spending. It's where the money goes that matters. The general wisdom seems to be that investing more in the infrastructure is a good idea. Really, while I don't mind getting the extra money, I think the stimulus check idea is too indirect, and not that likely to actually stimulate the economy.
