new laptop Final Four; my phone's journey to the Promised Province

Jan 15, 2007 23:44

Not that long ago, I can remember looking at laptops with 20-40GB hard drives, 512MB RAM if you were lucky, and compromised processors. A "combo drive" meant that you got a CD-RW. I'm so glad I didn't buy back in those dark ages - I'd be stuck with a piece of junk that would make the Canada World Youth laptops look good ( Read more... )

I don't know; I'm not that far along yet. =) I'll literally just install whatever suits my fancy that particular day. Which kind would you suggest?

Exactly what are you planning to use your laptop for, mostly?

A little bit of everything, including some old games, but mostly composition and photographical stuff.

I'm using a Dell Latitude, which isn't so bad for what you're talking about. It's been with me since 2003 and still working quite solidly, needing a bit of upgrades here and there.

My one beef with Dell is their shitty customer service here. My CD-RW doesn't write anymore, and a shift key is missing, all because the Dell customer service here is pretty shit and wouldn't fix them for me. (Malaysian customer service would've fixed both issues for me without questions.)

One of the people on my program in Ukraine had an Acer. Well, it wasn't hers completely - it was for the program. But it was kind of wonky - I can remember the sound always being off-pitch, and I wasn't sold on it - truth be told, I liked the simpler LG laptops better.

Yeah, I know Telus would be willing to play ball, but I don't want to extend my contract any further until I know for sure that I'm going to be in Canada for the next 3 years... I dunno. We'll see how the "repair" goes; I'm morbidly curious.

Also note the FireWire... that it's not there! =) A CNet video review called my attention to that little item. It almost had me, though. But it was Too Good To Be True.™

Oh my god. I'm laptop shopping too. Can we chat about specs? I need some help.

My range is $500-$700 (I'm looking to buy used, but still decent)

I'm going to Japan next year so I need to get all set up with something compact.

Hmm... you know, that unit Nic linked to isn't bad at all. I'm shooting about $400 higher because I wanted more RAM, a better graphics card, a newer-age CPU (that Turion 64 just isn't quite up to the standard of the Core 2 Duo), draft-N networking, a slightly bigger display and a few other doodads, but Nic was right about the Acers. You're much better off spending that money on a new machine than on an old one, usually.

But yeah, we can certainly chat about specs. Right now I'm looking into the differences between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo. If you're in a postion where you see both for the same price, go for Core 2. If you'll get a deal by not, then maybe settle for Core Duo.
