Sunday Evening, The Causeway

Oct 27, 2008 01:20

Alice was kneeling by the edge of the Causeway, wishing she did not have to say good-bye.

"Shall I wish you a safe journey?" she asked. "Was it a very long and arduous trip, to find your way here? Do you require anything to find your way back?"

(just for the Cat)

"Not to terribly long at all," the Cat assured her. "And I need nothing but that which I carry with myself. Perhaps I should be asking you, instead: are there any last things you require before I leave?"

"That's an unwise question to ask me, Cat," Alice said, her wistful smile turning suddenly playful. "I might insist, as your sovereign, that I be allowed to scritch your ears. And then where would we be?"

"I would be with scritched ears," the Cat replied. "Where that leaves you is for you to determine, but I think perhaps it would leave you most satisfied. Cats are known for offering comfort; and a singular Cat such as myself offers most singular comfort."

At that, Alice was going to hold her hand out and reach for his ears, letting her fingers scratch around and under them. "You have quite singular ears, as well," she laughed. "Do you imagine that we shall see one another soon?"
