Lucy Kaplansky concert 2008.3

Yesterday I got up, hit Bikram, got a trim and headed home where I wasted time until it was time to leave for the show.

Then I went to see Lucy Kaplansky at the World Cafe Live downstairs.

I had seen her years ago when she was part of Cry Cry Cry along with Richard Shindell and Dar Williams. (Good grief! Was it really 9 years ago?). She was good - but didn't grip me. Although I have to admit, I really enjoyed hearing her Dad's song about Pi.

Personally, I was more impressed with Craig Cardiff. He was full of great between song comments. Cardiff did a simple trick that I've been impressed with ever since I saw John Wesley do it. By using a foot pedal and a digital loop, he sang harmony with himself. At first it was short loops, but then Cardiff did whole choruses where he recorded the first chorus and sang harmony with the second! The only thing I didn't like about Cardiff's performance was the way he used the looping to leave the stage as his music faded out. I got an album of his on the way out and immediately added this strange Canuck to tourfilter.com.
