Why Jill Sobule is cool (Reason #47): She told her road manager to bring her volunteer assistants cake and pie from the green room.
Why Billy Bragg is cool (Reason #17): He liked my utilikilt.
Back in the 80s when I was spinning discs for a
college station I got to know
Billy Bragg's music. I enjoyed his folky simple style. When I left college I bought several of his albums on vinyl.
In 2002 I caught him at the
Trocedero. It was a good show, the band was tight; he rattled off his political agenda; told us that Woody Guthrie's guitar had "This machine kills fascists" written on the side; and stopped in the middle of a song to issue a marriage proposal for an fan in the audience.
When I heard he was coming through town, I figured I'd probably go.
Then I found out that
Jill Sobule was touring as his opening act. Since I am such a huge Jill supporter (I helped buy her an iBook to keep her on her mailing list), I volunteered and got a comp ticket.
So, my friends
immlass and
mcroft came down, I made them eat crock-pot goodness, then we went to the show.
I met up with her road manager and some fellow
Happytowners and we set up shop. As expected, people coming in said, "Who's that?" Because of the beer line in the lobby (no I wasn't waiting in line, there were just people milling around my table), I missed the first party of Jill's set. I made it inside in plenty of time to hear her
new songs. But during intermission, we sold a healthy number of CDs and some shirts.
Jill came out and signed for everyone. When Billy went on, she thanked us and asked if we wanted cake! Well, I won't turn that down! So I had some carrot cake.
Meanwhile over at the Billy merchandise table, a blond tattooed woman was selling his stuff. She was a local that apparently works there a lot. She told the manager she was a roller girl.
I stepped away from the table for a minute and when I got back there was a flyer on my table. For
She Devils Roller Derby. I was almost tempted to go, but timing wasn't good.
Anyway, I went in to listen to Billy, alone on stage with his guitar. He just released a mega-sized box set of his old stuff. So, it really brought me back to my college days - so I listened and sung along in a nostalgic haze. I was annoyed at the drunks in the back who were yelling "play a song" when he stopped to give us a history lesson - which occurred between most songs. So when I came out I had to buy the collection from the blond.
