The Death of Objective Journalism?

Feb 08, 2008 11:43

If you live in Madison, you know what a conservative rag the Wisconsin State Journal is. The only saving grace was that it was karmically balanced by The Capital Times, a wonderful breath of progressive liberal fresh air.

Well it was announced this morning that the Capital Times will cease publication. At least in any meaningful format.

See, The Cap Times was the afternoon paper. People want newspapers in the morning. So the Cap times was doomed.

I refused to by the WSJ. It's editorial board are the worst kind of Republican lapdogs. No, I don't mean conservative, I mean Republican. They've defended the senseless war in Iraq. They supported Bush's tax cuts that did nothing but make the deficit worse.  They were pro-impeachment when the 'crime' was a lie under oath about a sexual relationship that had nothing to do with the abuse of presidential power, but staunchly against it when the 'crimes' are: violation of the Constitutional right to unreasonable searche and seizure, a president claiming exemption from law passed by Congress, deliberate destruction of presidential records which belong to the people of the United States and not the Executive Branch of the government, and violation of US law prohibiting the torture of prisoners, and the suspension of habeas corpus without the requisition time of rebellion or insurrection. The WSJ was OK with all that... but the President getting a few hummers... now that was a high crime indeed.

Dave Zweifel, editor of the Cap Times, says that his paper will soldier on in the new world of online publishing and as a tabloid sized supplement to the WSJ twice a week. Well the only good news there is that print publications are dying the death of a million cuts due to the low barrier of entry and prevalence of the Internet. If I had to guess, the WSJ isn't long for this world either.

But pubishing online and in a throw-away supplement a couple of times a week is a sorry state for the proud publication Mr. Evjue started.

RIP Cap Times. Rot in hell WSJ.

Peace. Out.
