Sometimes, Sasuke wandered the castle on days he had no classes, aimlessly ambling around, examining the stone in the walls as he ran his hand along them. Those were the days when studying wasn't enough to capture his attention, when his gaze wandered to the windows and he had to distract himself from memories of air and sky beneath him, of stars within his grasp.
Sasuke's flying days were over, he knew, and he'd have to learn to live here on the ground.
Until he saw something like a comet in the Entrance Hall, a head of bright blonde hair and blue eyes as brilliant and deep as the center of the sky that was denied him--
No. It couldn't possibly be...
Sasuke ventured out farther into the Entrance Hall, his eyes locked on her. He couldn't have looked away if he had tried.
"Winry..." He wasn't aware of saying anything until he heard himself say it, the name he hadn't spoken, hadn't let himself speak or think or dream of for months.
For a moment Winry forgot where she was and kept walking. It wouldn't have been the first time that she had imagined hearing that voice with that name, after all, half asleep and pouring over automail equations, or whispered in the pounding of hammer on steel.
--Okay, so she'd missed him. So what, she was allowed.
Of course, she'd barely taken three steps when it occurred to her that this was Hogwarts, where he was, and that it wouldn't be impossible to hear that voice with that name after all.
There might have been a somewhat more momentous meeting-of-eyes-across-the-room sort of thing if the sudden realisation that that was really Sasuke hadn't made Winry squeak very slightly and drop both her trunk and her automail kit. "Oh - crap!" she exclaimed, dropping to her knees - the trunk was a non-issue, but she needed that kit in tact, damnit.
The rather loud crash that resulted as Winry dropped her trunk and kit broke the silence, snapped Sasuke back into reality. Because this was Winry, and she was here, and she came back, and...
And, oh yeah, maybe he should be helping her, except Sasuke couldn't move, couldn't make himself move. That same something, that force that had drawn him within twenty paces of her now rooted him to the ground, chained his legs to the spot.
At this point Winry had the kit open and was rummaging through to make sure everything was still in its place. She swallowed, well aware of Sasuke's dark gaze on her as she fumbled with the few screws and other small bits that had been shaken loose. It was only after she'd successfully returned everything to its place and snapped the case shut again that Winry became aware of the pain in her foot.
"Ow," she grumbled, shoving the trunk off the appendage she'd dropped it on. Still hyper aware of the fact that Sasuke was staring at her, she checked her foot for damage (ie, rested her weight on in for a moment) before crossing her legs, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear and finally looking back up at him.
"...Hi," she said softly. Hi was a good place to start.
