Micro-fabrication is becoming increasingly technologically and economically feasible, but there are some things for which we will always want/need mass production.

While it's true that the current production/distribution system is hideously un-customer-friendly, you CAN get exactly the car you want if you're stubborn enough. Last summer I went to the dealer knowing exactly which model, color, interior, and options I wanted. They kept coming up with cars that were close, but I kept saying no. Eventually they found the car I wanted -- in Santa Maria. They had someone drive it down for me and the only thing I had to compromise on was the inclusion of a sun roof, something I'd already decided I wouldn't mind.

But I like your idea better. It certainly would have saved me about four hours of time at the dealership!
