Makes me think of a former boss/friend of mine (who was worth over a million) who had the philosophy that if you scrimp and save on the little stuff (like brand names), you'll be more likely to be able to have enough money to splurge on stuff that really makes a difference (like vacations in Hawaii.)
The big thing I found (as a home owner), is that I'd far rather spend a little extra money on something that I'm not going to have to fix repeatedly. I'd rather have stuff that works, than the cheapest (or most expensive) item. I find a lot of time looking up reviews of every product I consider purchasing for the house.
Heh. My thought for the day today was almost: "Home repairs occur on the schedule of the spouse most annoyed by the problem" but the idiot on the freeway last night was more present in my mind when it came time to decide. I'm with crboltz on this one though. Don't save money at the expense of costing yourself more (including in aggravation) in the long run.
I think that if something as simple as buying a house can make you change your buying habits of everything else, you weren't very secure in your buying habits of everything else.
what are you up to, like 4 houses now? ;-) My change was more temporary, I think. Going through a period of having to supply a lot of new things for the house, including furniture, repairs, etc., so I had to suspend my regular frugality.
