The crucifix is a pretty big symbol in Catholicism. When my grandpa's new priest came in a number of years ago he had them take down the crucifix and just have a big statue of Jesus with his hands outstretched a lit to his side, claiming that Christ had been on the crucifix too long.

Apparently, a number of people were not happy with that idea.

"We're all about hope, encouragement and the joy of the Christian faith. We want to communicate good news, not bad news, so we need a more uplifting and inspiring symbol than execution on a cross."
How the hell can you leave out Christ's death? Yes, it sucks that he was put to death. However, it's a major event for Christians because Christ's death is a symbol that he came to earth to die for people's sins. You might as well leave out the other bad things that happened in Christianity too like Adam and Eve being banninated from the Garden of Eden (despite it's OT), how Mary and Joseph had to fled to Bethlehem because Harod wanted to kill him (as well as other first born males if memory serves me correct), and how Judas betrayed Jesus.
I believe if you are going to teach people about your faith, you teach them EVERYTHING...good and bad. It's no different than teaching people history. When one teaches history...you are supposed to teach them the good, the bad, and the ugly. Not leave bad things out.
