It was surprising how quickly a quiet, almost frustratingly boring day with the Order could change into a frantic life or death adventure. Tonks suspected it had something to do with the high percentage of Gryffindors around; plans and expectations vanished when faced with the enthusiastic recklessness of the red and gold. Honestly, would it kill them to recruit some more Hufflepuffs? Just to even things out a bit.

The day had made it's turn from boring to daring with a number of sudden revelations: one, Minerva McGonagall was alive; two, she was in England; and three, they needed to find her right away before the Death Eaters could get to her. Add to that the fact that Remus and Dean Thomas had both somehow gotten this information at very nearly the same time.

However it had happened, Tonks now found herself on an unknown street with Remus and Dean heading towards a rented room and an old friend who was going to be very surprised to see them.

It had been a surprise for Dean to find out that Remus had gotten the same information as he had, almost at the same time. He hadn't asked who his informant was, since it was more important to bring McGonagall back and do it fast. Besides, Remus's source was a good one, since the information he had got was the same as Dean's.

So here he was, in his first mission after he had gone back to the Order. He was feeling a little nervous about it, and tried to push away the thoughts of the last time he had done something similar: that would only endanger all of them.

The street seemed clear and while they approached the building, Dean hoped they weren't late to rescue the former teacher.

And once more, Remus found himself at the helm, rushing off into complete uncertainty. However, there hadn't been time to truly plan as much as he would have liked. The owl had come from Severus and Remus hadn't thought beyond rushing into battle and getting Minerva out of there. It was top on the list of what had to be done. Planning or no, they would have to deal with what they were given ( ... )

If it was up to Minerva, she wouldn't stay in one place for too long. As it was, she more likely than not had a price on her head, and it was always harder to get a moving target. The decision to rest, while necessary, set her on edge.

Constant vigilance, she thought to herself, a corner of her mouth tilting up as she heard the words said in Moody's usual way that he...used to have. The moment passed as quick as it arrived, and she frowned ( ... )

Their hurried footsteps echoed as they approached the door, but it hardly mattered. This mission was about speed, not stealth. The door was locked and no sounds came from the room. Either everything was fine or they'd come too late, there was only one way to find out.

Tonks raised her wand to force the door open when it was opened from the inside and she found herself face to face with Minerva McGonagall. She looked slightly surprised and slightly annoyed and completely in control of the situation - an expression so familiar that for a moment Tonks wondered if she was going to give them all detention.

"We got word that some Death Eaters were coming here looking for you," Tonks said blithely. "Thought it might be a good idea if we got here first."
