Today was kind of an "ehhh" day, so, to make up for it- let's have a quick Miss Bingley interlude!

In passing a group of women, Caroline heard her own name mentioned, and, seeing that she was not noticed, stopped to listen.

"Did you see Miss Bingley arrive? She's looking as proud as ever. You would not think she had been recently disappointed." said a young lady by the name of Miss Mallory.

"Miss Bingley, disappointed?" replied her friend, a Miss Cartwright.

"Oh, haven't you heard? Mr. Darcy is lately married."

Miss Cartwright gasped. "No! To whom?"

Miss Mallory smiled and leaned in confidentially, enunciating each word with unmitigated enjoyment. "A perfect nobody."

"Oh, how famous!" Miss Cartwright clapped her hands in delight. "And Miss Bingley seemed so sure of him!"

"Apparently he was not so sure of her," said Miss Mallory, with a smile.

"Poor creature," a third woman, Miss Adams, sighed, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "She set her cap at him very hard, and now she has got nothing to show for it. It's quite mortifying."

"Very mortifying, indeed," said Caroline, finally announcing her presence.

Miss Adams spun around, her eyes widening. "My dearest Miss Bingley!" Her laughter trilled nervously. "I did not see you there."

"Obviously not," said Caroline coldly.

Miss Mallory stepped in, attempting a playful tone. "How long have you been hiding there, you wicked creature?"

"Oh, not long," Caroline replied carelessly. "I did hear Miss Adams mention something being very mortifying." She paused, glancing pointedly at Miss Mallory's attire. "I assumed she must have been speaking of your gown."

As Miss Mallory gaped most unbecomingly, with a smile and a bow Caroline turned away.
