[Open] [The thing with the daughter AU]

Nov 18, 2011 16:47

Things on Atem's end had been quiet for a couple of days. He seemed to be struggling with something, though as per the usual, he wasn't letting on as to what it was. Yet somehow he tried to make things seem normal. As normal as they could be. But whatever it was, it had to do with his daughter Yuiko. You know. That cute adorable girl that appeared ( Read more... )

Ryou's protective nature immediately changed once she heard the quiet crying from the little girl. She quickly became serious.

"What's wrong, sweetheart? Is he sick? Could you get a hold of your Tousan, Uncle Mokuba, or Isono-san?" Surely the little girl would have thought to call them first before she would called Ryou. It had her worried if she couldn't get a hold of Kaiba, let alone not Mokuba or Isono.

Ryou felt the urge to roll her eyes. Really, Atem. Still couldn't take care of himself when he was sick.

But, she wasn't going to be annoyed with Atem in front of Yuiko. Especially not now. Right now, just answers and comfort were needed.

"What kind of not feeling well? Did he feel unusually warm to you? Was he coughing or sneezing a lot?"

No one was going to be more angry at her daddy than she was, but she couldn't muster the energy to be mad at him right now. She was just scared.

"He might have had a fever." She knew what was being asked of her, as the nurses and doctors had asked her the moment they arrived as well. "It looked like his stomach was hurting him a lot, I think." A deep frown and a sniffle as she recounted for the other.

Ryou nodded and listened, trying to mentally figure what was happening and what happened to lead up to these events. She knew that she wasn't a doctor so she couldn't diagnose anything.

"Maybe we'll be lucky and the surgery, whatever it's for, is for something small. He might even get a tiny scar to show for it." At least she was trying lighten the mood.

Another small hiccup erupted from her, unable to stop them at this point. She'd been crying for far too long. But the mention of a scar didn't seem to make her happy- instead the reaction was something far more curious.

It enticed quite a pout. "Tou-san will be mad if they make marks on daddy..."

Ryou paused, trying to rethink of a better way to rephrase what she had said. She did know what surgery meant, right?

"Well, when I meant tiny, I meant like freckle size. I remember seeing a few medical specials a few months back where surgeries can be made that small and not hurt the patient at all."

Finally Yuiko settled into Ryou's arms a little more comfortably, but she still refused to relinquish her hold completely. Isono continually watched the two, having sat a few seats away at this point.

"I don't want them to hurt daddy." She laid her head on the woman's shoulder.

"They won't hurt him, I promise." With Kaiba watching them like a hawk, she doubted they would get away with their lives intact if they 'hurt' him.

"Surgery is meant to help people heal, to help them feel better. I've had one or two myself in my lifetime, and I've turned out fine." She distinctly remembers the ones for her left hand and arm, the ones that the spirit was directly responsible for. The surgery and recovery had been painful experiences for both injuries, and she will always remember them, but at least both have faded to a minimum by now.

"So, I think your Daddy will be okay too."

"He better be." Her daddy was strong and perfect and amazing. He would have to be okay, wouldn't he? She couldn't tolerate the thoughts otherwise. He'd always pulled through other stuff.

And what would the world be like without the best duelist around? Her eyes closed as she hid her face in Ryou's shoulder once more. She didn't want to think about it anymore.

Ryou continued to hold her close, knowing that this was probably the best they could do, just waiting. She rubbed the little back in comfort, just being a center of calmness for Yuiko. She even hummed a little for her, something that she had picked up from her father whom had learned it in Egypt. It was basically a prayer hymn, to help the sick get well and to give their loved ones comfort and hope.

She had seen it work a few times (though it didn't help her own mother and sister) maybe it could help Atem, since he actually was Egyptian, and an important one at that. She basically hummed the tune, saying a few words here and there, but continued to be a pillar for Yuiko.
