After weeks of bitching about soccer, I'm actually watching my first game of the World Cup: Spain vs Portugal

I agree. World Cup sucks. I might have been interested if Ireland was in it... no no I wouldn't.

Eh, it's a difference of opinion. I can't stand American Football as there's less action in my mind (for ever ten seconds of play, there's a ten minute set up). Soccer the play is constant. And, like any sport, it can vary widely from game to game. Some games are nail biters, some are easy to see who wins. The clock keeps going, with the amount that was none play (the time outs, medical, etc.) added to the end - meaning the players have to keep going until the ref blows the final whistle

Soccer's never been my sport, either, so I hear you. However, things like this make it a lot more appealing...
